History of Cumberland County
Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, is one of the Commonwealth’s original counties, established on January 27, 1750, by the Pennsylvania General Assembly, carved out of Lancaster County and named for Cumberland, England. The region was first settled around 1730 primarily by Scots-Irish immigrants, with English and German settlers making up about ten percent of the early population. Early settlers built agrarian communities in the fertile Cumberland Valley, laying the groundwork for the county’s agricultural heritage. Two of these communities—Shippensburg and Carlisle—remain its oldest towns, with Carlisle serving as the county seat from its founding. During the Civil War’s Gettysburg campaign in 1863, Confederate forces marched through Cumberland County, briefly occupying several towns before moving northwest toward Gettysburg. Over the 20th and early 21st centuries, Cumberland County evolved from a rural farming area into a thriving suburban hub within the Harrisburg–Carlisle Metropolitan Statistical Area.
