History of Dauphin County
Settlement of Dauphin County began in 1719 when Yorkshire native John Harris Sr. built a log cabin and established Harris’s Ferry across the Susquehanna River, laying the groundwork for present-day Harrisburg. His son, John Harris Jr., petitioned the Pennsylvania General Assembly in 1782 to separate the region from Lancaster County; by an act of March 4, 1785, Dauphin County was created and named in honor of Louis Joseph, the Dauphin of France, to acknowledge France’s support during the American Revolution. Harrisburg was incorporated as a borough in 1791 and chartered as a city in 1860.
The county’s fertile river valley and Appalachian foothills fueled early fur trade and agriculture. Canal and railroad construction in the 19th century transformed it into a transportation hub, while the Harrisburg courthouse briefly served as Pennsylvania’s capital in 1812 before the State Capitol’s completion in 1822. Industrial growth included 19th-century meatpacking and iron production. The establishment of Three Mile Island Nuclear Generating Station and the 1979 nuclear incident near Middletown marked pivotal 20th-century events.
